Wrong! On her way to the entrance ceremony, she’s accosted by a boy who looks almost exactly like her, and dragooned into wearing his uniform and going to Shishiku, a boys’ school for rampaging delinquents! The school is essentially a fighting tournament to discover the toughest young hoods to rule the school, and Hinako’s new identity of Hikaru turns out to be a huge target painted on her back.

But now she’s going into an elegant girls-only academy, where Hinako will finally be able to be feminine and have friendships with other girls. Ever since, the rumors about her fighting skills have kept her from having any friends. She grew up in an orphanage, constantly harassed by bullies until she learned to fight back, only to get a reputation as a violent tomboy. Hinako is looking forward to high school. It's mostly a big misunderstanding in some scenes. The story seems really dark and shady (I suppose it is) but is explained and is pretty funny. Not my favorite but close to it!! The faces all were well proportioned (except for the too large eyes in a few characters but whatever). Totomaru Minowa is my fav probably bc of the bandanna and bc of his reactions to the MC. He acts so creepy!!! I know it's explained away but I still don't like him. But some of the others were really great. Some of the characters were honestly meh. MC finds out that the school she is attending in disguise is one for male delinquents and you have to physically fight your way up the ranks. The boy tells MC that he absolutely cannot miss his entrance ceremony so he sends MC, dressed up as a boy. Ends up being someone who looks identical to the MC. Our main character sees a boy get hit in the street, runs over to see if he's ok. The concept of the story is introduced pretty fast and quickly in the beginning so I'll gloss over that real fast. I found a lot of it to be really hilarious, the rest to be sorta random but still enjoyable! Though, ultimately, maybe I am expecting too much of a light-hearted comedy manga. I did like that senior Mirako - who straight up is a pansexual icon. Even the gay panic of Totomaru - who much prefers boy-Hinako than girl-Hiraku. Speaking of Hiraku, I wish it would come out and be upfront that the character is a trans girl, instead of just pushing it into 'just a boy who loves to cross-dress' thing we see too often. I would be more interested if it would have some background to why Hinako was abandoned (even if it is a comedy manga) and what Hiraku's family is like. Sure, there is a boy harem developing, but it seems very generic in terms of characters. Hinako, being a fighter herself, is apt for the role, but keeping her secret while also trying to rise to the top of the school (in fighting, not studying) is going to prove a challenge.īesides the comedy situations, this story doesn't have much to offer, in my opinion. Hinako, who has always known herself to be an orphan, is on her way to the first day of high school, when her twin brother Hiraku pops out of nowhere, makes her go in his place to his boys-only high school, Shishiku, which is famous for having kids of mob bosses. The plot of this one can loosely be explained as 'She's the Man' in a high school for delinquents setting. Kenka Bancho Otome is simple, silly, and a fun read all things considered.
#KENKA BANCHO OTOME ENGLISH RELEASE SERIES#
It's also nice that this series seems to be going straight for one guy rather than spinning its wheels having a romance arc with each character before going for the "true ending," which is also a nice change of pace for otome adaptations. It's pretty straightforward, and the characters are pretty simple without too much depth to them, but as this is a slapstick rom com based on an otome dating sim, the sexy trope guys and a well-defined female MC as far as dating sims go works pretty well. Much of this book cycles between comedy, slapstick comedy, and semi-serious battles, and I kind of dig it. For one thing, Hinako fights and fights hard. Going in, I thought this would be like So Cute It Hurts!!, but it's not. She then has to switch places with him and go to his school of delinquents to fight (because she's pretty bad ass) to become the "boss" in his place (because he hates fighting and seems to be enjoying his life as a girl at her school). Hinako discovers that she not only has an identical twin, but that her twin is the future head of a Yakuza family. This is way different than the manga I've been reading lately, and it's such a breath of fresh air.
